WE ROCK SO OUR YOUTH CAN WRITE

A Beautiful Marriage of Literature & Art

The Urban Speculative Fiction Literary Foundation (USFLF), under the leadership of President D. Lee Hatchett, is partnering with the Omaha Public Library Foundation for Omaha’s 1st Annual Rocking Chair-ity™ fundraiser on September 18, 2009.

This event will bring Omaha’s finest artists, the nation’s best urban speculative fiction authors, philanthropic citizens, civic organizations, corporations, and guests together for an evening of literature, art, food, drinks and entertainment. Each artist will paint one rocking chair based on a popular urban speculative fiction novel. The result will be twelve beautifully designed rocking chairs that will be remain on display in Omaha’s public libraries.  Featured Omaha artists are:

Bill HooverNatalie LinstromJean MasonStephanie Olesh

Carlleta HartyWatie WhiteLinda HatfieldFaith Enright

Debra McColleyJames FreemanEddith BuisKristin Pluhacek

Proceeds from this unique event will go toward the USFLF’s Word Warrior Writing Workshops™, which teach Omaha’s at-risk youth to write, edit, publish, market and sell their own science fiction, fantasy or thriller stories in the form of an anthology.  Students who successfully complete the program will receive a publishing credit and a refurbished laptop to enhance their computer skills and continue their writing careers.  Applications for youth will be available on the www.urbanliterati.org website in late August.

Carolyn Rooker, CEO of the Omaha Public Library Foundation, says of this event, “It is a wonderful opportunity for the community to enjoy the very finest in literature and art while supporting our city’s local libraries and youth.”

The Rocking Chair-ity™ fundraiser is scheduled for Friday, September 18, 2009, at the W. Dale Clark Library at 215 South 15th Street at 6:30pm, and will be the featured charity at the 2009 Omaha Lit Fest opening social event.  There is no cost for admission but donations will be accepted during the event.  Interested volunteers may also visit www.urbanliterati.org.

The Urban Speculative Fiction Literary Foundation (USFLF) is a tax exempt, non-profit 501(c)(3), whose sole purpose is to develop the life skills, business acumen, literary talents, and imaginations of our youth through speculative fiction.
